The GW Title IX Office Convenes
Title IX Regulations Task Force

On June 23, 2022, the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the Department of Education released proposed changes to the Title IX regulations.

On July 14, 2022, the Title IX Office convened the Title IX Regulations Task Force in response to the Department of Education's proposed changes.  For more information on the Task Force, please read the full community release (PDF)

Below you will find resources and important updates regarding the Title IX regulations.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Title IX regulations or their impact on the university's polices and procedures, please reach out to the Title IX Office at [email protected] and a staff member will be happy to connect with you.

Injunction Impacts Implementation of 2024 Title IX Regulations

On April 29, 2024, the U.S. Department of Education published new Title IX regulations that outline how colleges and universities must respond to reports of sex discrimination and sex-based harassment. The regulations become effective as of August 1, 2024. However, a recently issued injunction that applies to nearly 700 universities, including GW, blocks the Department of Education from enforcing the 2024 Title IX regulations for any of the universities covered by the injunction. Unless, and until the injunction is lifted or narrowed, the existing regulations remain in effect. Therefore, GW’s current Title IX Sexual Harassment and Related Conduct Policy will remain in effect until further notice.                                                                                                    ~Updated Thursday, July 25, 2024

2024 Title IX Regulations Published

On April 29, 2024, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) published new Title IX regulations that outline how colleges and universities must respond to reports of sex discrimination and sex-based harassment. The regulations become effective as of August 1, 2024.  The ED published a fact sheet and a summary of the major provisions of the regulations, which community members are encouraged to review.

The Department of Education's Proposed Title IX Regulations: A Webinar on Major Provisions

On September 21, 2022, and September 22, 2022, the GW community was invited to attend an educational webinar that provided an update on the major provisions of the proposed Title IX regulations and how they compare with GW's current policies and procedures.

GW Community Feedback on the 2022 Proposed Title IX Regulations

The Title IX Office, in consultation with the Title IX Regulations Task Force, created an online form to gather the GW community's reflections and reactions to the Department of Education's (ED) proposed changes to the Title IX regulations. Since the University may not have time to gather feedback after the ED issues a final rule and it becomes effective, we seek the GW community's insight now. While the final regulations may not mirror the proposed regulations, it is likely that some of the proposed provisions will make it into the final rule. It is crucial for the University to know how our community feels about the proposed regulatory changes to help inform future policy development.  You can complete the online form at the link provided here or under the resources section below.
